NEW YORK (AP) - New York State is reversing course and is no longer withholding funding for 16 New York City homeless shelters.

The state announced earlier in the week that an investigation had found that those shelters were in poor condition.

It vowed to withhold funding until repairs were made.

But on Friday, the state relented, saying that the Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office had vowed to release a plan for the repairs by next week.

Homelessness has reached a record high in New York. About 57,000 people use city shelters.

The fight over funding was the latest in a long line of disagreements between de Blasio and his fellow Democrat, Governor Andrew Cuomo.

They have also clashed about tax hikes on the rich, the mayor’s affordable housing plan and uniformed worker pensions.
