OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (AP) - Work soon will begin on a $25 million project to transform a vacant Oklahoma City school into an apartment complex intended to be an affordable housing option for residents.
Developer Ron Bradshaw purchased the former Page Woodson School in 2013 from the school district, The Oklahoman (https://bit.ly/1RPHeGs ) reported.
Plans call for the school to be converted into 68 apartments, meant to be a budget-friendly choice for residents in Oklahoma City, where downtown apartments regularly command more than $1,000 in monthly rent.
A one-bedroom unit in the proposed complex will rent for $655 a month. A two-bedroom unit will rent for $750 a month.
“A classroom will become a one-bedroom unit; a larger classroom will become two bedrooms,” Bradshaw said. “This will be a really neat development.”
Bradshaw said he discussed redevelopment plans for months with the National Park Service to ensure the school remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places and to qualify for historic tax credits.
He also has visited with residents in the surrounding neighborhood and with officials from a nearby hospital to ensure the project proceeds with their support.
Lingo Construction is set to oversee the work that will begin this summer at the school. Some parts of the school won’t remain, including a swimming pool that Bradshaw said is in poor shape and wouldn’t meet current codes.
