APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say one person is dead several others were hurt after a boating accident east of metropolitan Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says a boat on Canyon Lake struck a rock Saturday, injuring five people who were on board.

Sheriff’s spokesman Christopher Hegstrom says one person has died and alcohol may have been a factor.

Hegstrom says no other boats were involved.

Sheriff’s deputies are still investigating and have not released anymore details.

Canyon Lake, about 50 miles east of central Phoenix, is a popular destination for boating and waterskiing.

It joins with the Salt River and lies near the Superstition Mountains.
