FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Drivers in Fayetteville no longer have to take a detour many had been forced to follow for more than two years.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1ENEjnJ ) that on Friday, one lane in each direction on the new U.S. 301 bridge across the Cape Fear River opened. An old bridge across the river was closed back in 2012 after engineers declared it obsolete.

The $16 million replacement project also included replacing the bridge over nearby Cross Creek.

Officials say all lanes on both bridges will be open by this fall.

While the bridge construction was underway, traffic had been detoured to Interstate 95 to cross the river.
