ETNA, Maine (AP) - Authorities are investigating who may have dug up a grave in the Maine town of Etna and why.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department was contacted early Friday morning by the Pleasant Hill Cemetery sexton who discovered the dug-up grave site.
Investigators believe the vandalism happened between late Thursday evening and Friday morning.
Sgt. Roy Peary told WMTW-TV (https://bit.ly/1Hk8ebl ) that the vandal or vandals removed enough soil to reach the vault holding the casket of a woman who died in 2003. Peary says he also found what look like pry marks on the vault.
The woman’s relatives say no jewelry or valuables were buried with her.
Anyone who may have information about the incident or who may have witnessed anything suspicious is asked to contact the sheriff’s department at 1-800-696-5403.
