PALM BAY, Fla. (AP) - A small central Florida city is renaming a baseball field in honor of three young children who police say were killed by their mother earlier this year.

During a ceremony Saturday, the mayor unveiled a sign that reads “Angels’ Field in memory of Lacy, Phillip and Christopher.” The children used to play ball at the Palm Bay West Little League. A $3,000 check was also donated during the ceremony for children who want to play in the league.

The children’s 33-year-old mother has been charged with three counts of murder in their deaths. Authorities say Jessica Lacey McCarty suffers from mental illness and tried to commit suicide in the past.

On the night of their deaths, McCarty was found outside the home carrying a knife. The children were 7, 6 and 6-months old.
