PORT SHELDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 24-year-old man has been killed and three other people injured after their boat struck the outside wall of a pier in western Michigan’s Port Sheldon Township.

The boat appeared to have been traveling south on Lake Michigan when it slammed early Saturday into the north pier at the Pigeon Lake channel, west of Grand Rapids.

Ottawa County sheriff’s officials say Matthew Boomstra of Byron Center was pronounced dead at the scene.

Travis Buckley of Hudsonville, and Jennifer Hielkema and Alberto Diez were being treated at area hospitals. Hielkema and Diez are from Byron Center.

Authorities received a call about the wreck shortly before 1 a.m. The Grand Rapids Press reports that conditions were foggy when rescuers arrived.
