BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - A student’s commencement speech at Binghamton University has been pre-recorded.

Graduating senior Don Greenberg was allowed to videotape his graduation speech Wednesday so he could honor the Jewish Sabbath on Saturday. The student from Teaneck, New Jersey, was chosen to be a commencement speaker for the university’s engineering school.

But as an Orthodox Jew who honors Shabbat, Greenberg must avoid electronic devices such as the microphone and lighting system used during the ceremony.

So Greenberg’s address was to be shown on large screens flanking the stage while he stands at the podium.
