DETROIT (AP) - More than 300 Detroit-area residents plan to board up abandoned homes, plant flowers and clear vacant lots as part of National Arab American Service Day.

Saturday’s project around the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in northeast Detroit is one of 18 such efforts in 17 cities and the District of Columbia. Roughly 2,000 volunteers are expected to participate overall.

The 11th annual service day is hosted by the Dearborn-based National Network of Arab Communities, a project of the nonprofit ACCESS.
