DEXTER, N.M. (AP) - The police chief of a southeastern New Mexico town is the subject of a criminal investigation.

The Roswell Daily Record reports (https://bit.ly/1A6lWPA) that New Mexico State Police said Friday that they have opened an investigation into Dexter Police Chief Mario Contreras.

State Police Capt. Lance Bateman declined to disclose further details.

Dexter Mayor Mitch Daubert confirmed Contreras has been placed on administrative leave but would not say what allegations he faces.

Daubert says if the allegations stand, the city and police will take them very seriously.

When reached by the newspaper for comment, Contreras hung up the phone.

Contreras, a 10-year veteran of the department, was named police chief six months ago following the resignation of the chief at the time.
