SPEARFISH, S.D. (AP) - Three weeks after police found 36 dogs and five cats in the back of an SUV in Spearfish, the animals are thriving and being adopted.

KOTA-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1Fkz9UW ) Spearfish police officers found the 36 toy-breed dogs and five cats inside the vehicle last month in a Walmart parking lot.

Now, all five cats will soon be up for adoption and 25 dogs are still available to find new homes. Some have been placed in foster homes.

Brenda Hendricks is the co-director of the Western Hills Humane Society. She says a large majority of the dogs are already spayed and neutered, but not all of the puppies are trained. She says they’re working on domesticating them.

Lisa Dietzel of Shullsburg, Wisconsin, has been charged with misdemeanor animal neglect.
