WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - West Haven police say a man trying to drive away from police tried to hit an officer, then crashed into another car, seriously injuring its driver.

Police said 38-year-old Mansa Bethea of West Haven was arrested after the Friday night crash at Main Street and First Avenue. He is held on charges including attempted assault on police, reckless driving, failure to obey an officer and motor vehicle charges. It’s not immediately known if he has an attorney to comment.

Police said the incident began when an officer on foot tried to approach Bethea about an outstanding parole violation warrant, and Bethea tried to hit the officer with his car.

Police said he crashed into a utility pole a short distance away and struck the other car.
