STURGIS, S.D. (AP) - Crews in Meade County may have found human burial sites in the area of a proposed highway bypass that would reroute drivers around the motorcycle mecca of Sturgis.

The Meade County Commission received a preliminary report this week that suggests there are ceremonial grave sites within the planned area of the Fort Meade Way that would link Interstate 90 to Highway 34.

The find is the latest snag in the project that has been met with much opposition. Voters overwhelmingly rejected setting up a tax increment financing district to pay for the project in March.

The commission has ordered additional archaeological studies to insure any potential remains or sacred artifacts are protected. In the event anything is found in that study, plans for the road could be delayed.
