SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says hunters took 11 percent more turkeys during the 2015 spring season than they did a year ago.

The department said in a news release Friday that hunters killed 14,999 turkeys in the season that covered parts of April and May. During the 2014 spring season hunters took 13,514 turkeys.

DNR forest wildlife biologist Paul Shelton said the increase was a result of a boost in the population of young turkeys in 2014. He said that’s particularly true in the west-central half of northern Illinois.

More than half of the turkeys killed this spring were taken in northern Illinois.

The season ran in 100 of the state’s 102 counties.
