RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The suspect in the shooting death of a Johnson County reserve deputy sheriff remains jailed in neighboring Pope County.

Prosecutors have not announced charges against the suspect and a jailer said Saturday that it wasn’t known if the suspect has an attorney.

A phone call to the district attorney’s office on Saturday rang unanswered.

Arkansas State Police say 42-year-old reserve deputy Sonny Smith was shot early Friday after confronting the suspect when Smith and other deputies responded to a burglary report. Smith was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

State police say Smith was able to return fire and that the suspect suffered minor injuries.
