CHICAGO (AP) - A centuries-old honor is planned Sunday for the late Cardinal Francis George.

The ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral is called “Month’s Mind” Mass and is meant to recognize the one-month anniversary of a person’s death.

Cardinal George died April 17 after a long battle with cancer. He retired as Chicago archbishop in the fall of 2014.

Members of the archdiocese will raise the late cardinal’s galero and suspend it inside the cathedral sanctuary. A galero is a red, ceremonial hat that cardinals receive after joining the College of Cardinals.

The tradition ended in the 1960s but Cardinal George received one as a gift. Red hats belonging to Chicago’s five previous cardinals already hang inside the cathedral.

Mass is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. and is open the public.
