BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - Butte-Silver Bow County has spent or committed more than $1 million of Superfund money without approval from the board that oversees the funds.

The move irked some members of the board created to oversee the Redevelopment Trust Fund, but they still retroactively approved the expenditures this past week.

Jon Sesso is the Superfund coordinator and planning director for Butte-Silver Bow.

Sesso tells The Montana Standard (https://tinyurl.com/qhdoo33 ) that the money was spent or committed before the 11-member trust fund board was established.

Money was spent for contaminated dirt removal and committed to projects like a new baseball field.

The trust fund consists of some $14 million that was paid by Atlantic Richfield Co. to Butte-Silver Bow as a part of an agreement over damage caused by mining.
