NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) - Construction of a 1,000-foot runway extension at Vermont’s Newport State Airport in Coventry is set to begin.

The work beginning Monday to lengthen the runway from 4,000 feet to 5,000 feet will allow larger jets to use the airport under all weather conditions, day or night.

The extension is being funded with help from an $8 million grant from Federal Aviation Administration.

The start of construction was announced during a groundbreaking ceremony for the AnC Bio plant in Newport.

The Caledonian Record (https://bit.ly/1E9TAi5 ) reports that developer Bill Stenger says the airport extension will also open up the airport for more freight transportation, essential for the success of the AnC bio plant.
