MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - Witness statements say the sheriff’s deputy shot in the head in a gas station lot was ambushed by a man carrying a strange package who appeared out of the adjoining woods.

Police reports following the shooting of Berkeley County Sheriff’s Lt. Will Rogers late Thursday say the law officer was shot in the back of the head, but was conscious and alert when help arrived.

One witness and surveillance video identified the gunman as wearing a mask, dark pants and a white, long-sleeved shirt. He was carrying a red bag.

A witness told authorities the shooter appeared from the woods next to the Moncks Corner gas station where Rogers had stopped and fired three bullets from a silver revolver as the deputy stood outside his vehicle.
