ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) - Zenit St. Petersburg won the Russian Premier League for the fourth time Sunday, securing the title by drawing 1-1 with FC Ufa.

Zenit, which last won the championship in 2012, has dominated the league all season as its big-spending strategy finally paid off.

One of those expensive acquisitions, Brazilian striker Hulk, scored Zenit’s goal Sunday with a fierce free kick.

That was the 15th league goal of the season for Hulk, who was signed from Porto for a reported 60 million euros in 2012 and is the Russian Premier League’s top scorer this season.

Haris Handzic’s late header for Ufa dampened the party mood at the Petrovsky stadium, but fans celebrated the final whistle with pyrotechnics as coach Andre Villas-Boas hugged his players in celebration.

Zenit fans had been celebrating even before kickoff, staging a mass march to the stadium with banners and smoke bombs.

Zenit was not presented with the trophy after the game because it was technically the away team under Russian league rules, despite the match being played at Zenit’s own stadium.

Ufa has been homeless for its first season in the top tier because its stadium is being rebuilt and the two clubs struck a deal to play in St. Petersburg.

Sunday’s draw gives Zenit an unbeatable eight-point lead with two games left to play.

CSKA Moscow and FC Krasnodar are fighting for the second of Russia’s two Champions League spots. They are level on points after Krasnodar drew 2-2 with Torpedo Moscow on Sunday.

Earlier, defending champion CSKA strengthened its bid for Champions League qualification, climbing back into second place with a 4-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow in Russia’s biggest derby game.

Roman Eremenko took advantage of repeated errors by the Spartak defense to score two early goals before Zoran Tosic and Ahmed Musa extended CSKA’s lead.

During the match, a fan ran from the stands with the apparent aim of confronting Spartak coach Murat Yakin, who is disliked by many supporters following a disappointing season with nine-time champion Spartak in sixth. The fan was detained and led away by security.

On Saturday, Lokomotiv Moscow beat Rubin Kazan 3-0, Amkar Perm defeated Kuban Krasnodar 1-0 and Arsenal Tula and Terek Grozny drew 1-1. On Friday, Mordovia Saransk and FC Rostov drew 0-0.
