EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) - A former Eau Claire County treasurer and deputy treasurer are accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from taxpayers.

County chairman Gregg Moore says the county has filed an insurance claim for more than $625,000 and that the figure could increase.

Eau Claire police said Monday its detectives began investigating questionable financial transactions in the county treasurer’s office in January. A former treasurer and deputy treasurer, who both left the office in 2013, were expected to appear in Eau Claire County Circuit Court Monday. Both employees had been worked in the treasurer’s office for more than 30 years.

Authorities say there’s no evidence further misappropriation happened after they left the office.
