ALTOONA, Iowa (AP) - Altoona police say an officer kept a wandering zebra under control until its owner showed up.

Department spokesman Jason Ferguson says officers were sent Saturday morning to check reports of a zebra roaming near Sam Wise Sports Complex. They found it, and Sgt. Royal Nahno-Kerchee held its mane until owner Pat Shannon arrived.

The zebra had wandered away from home less than a mile away after a gate was left open.

Fergus described the situation as an oddity and said, “No one would have thought twice if it was a horse walking around.”
