HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) - Elk numbers are up again in the Bitterroot Valley south of Missoula.

The Ravalli Republic reports (https://bit.ly/1KfNhBT ) that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks official have spotted 8,054 elk in the valley and surrounding mountains this year.

Biologist Rebecca Mowry counted the elk on 25 flights over a five-week period. Last year, she counted 7,391 during the same flights.

Elk numbers in some parts of the valley are higher than what officials would like to see and they along with citizens are considering solutions.
