DOVER, Del. (AP) - About 500 graduates from Delaware State University received a commencement speech from the former president of Ghana.

The News Journal of Wilmington (https://delonline.us/1JrUNIv ) reports John Kufuor spoke Sunday at the school’s football stadium. Officials say Kufour’s visit was the first time a former head of state had addressed the university.

Kufuor told the DSU students that they need to think of themselves as the leaders who will pick up the immense challenges his generation has been fighting all over the world.

Kufour also received an honorary doctorate from the school and hosted a town hall session Sunday evening.

Kufuor served two terms as president of the Republic of Ghana from 2001 to 2009 and is currently a global ambassador against hunger for the United Nations.
