HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - State prison officials say an inmate convicted of robbery is considered an escapee after leaving a job site near Birmingham.

The Department of Corrections says 46-year-old John Edward Sharpe was on work release when he left his workplace in Hoover on Monday.

The man is serving 20 years for a 2009 robbery conviction in Shelby County.

Sharpe was a minimum-security inmate. He was last seen wearing a white prison uniform.
