TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Walter Energy says almost 400 people working at its coal mine in Brookwood could lose their jobs because of the weak steel industry.

The Tuscaloosa News (https://bit.ly/1c0Tfb4 ) reports the cutbacks could affect the Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 7 and two other facilities.

A notice filed by the company says 370 union and salaried employees could be laid off beginning around July 15.

The company laid off 38 workers from the No. 7 mine about two months ago.

Weakness in the steel industry is lowering demand for coal. Walter Energy vice president Bill Stanhouse says the cutbacks are likely is market conditions don’t improve.
