SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police say an employee of a liquor store was beaten during a robbery attempt.

It happened about 10:55 p.m. Friday at Spruance City Liquors in Smyrna. Troopers say an employee had just closed the store and was walking to his car when a man approached him from behind and demanded money.

Police say the while employee tried to get money from his pockets, the suspect began hitting him in the head with an unknown object.

Authorities say the suspect ran away after a car drove past the parking lot.

Police say the employee was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
