ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - An Illinois man has been charged with carjacking and kidnapping after Michigan authorities say he drove off with a car with a 16-month-old boy inside.
Authorities say the boy’s mother was parked outside a motel in the Detroit suburb of Romulus about 2 a.m. Saturday when the 23-year-old man forced his way into the car and drove away with Ayden Casteels inside.
Ayden was found asleep and safe about 7:30 a.m. Saturday in nearby Westland.
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says Jawaan Johnson of Markum, Illinois, was arraigned Monday in Romulus District Court. He’s jailed on a $100,000 cash bond and returns to court May 27.
It’s unknown if he has a lawyer.
