CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Police in Chapel Hill say an officer trying to stop a motorist for speeding was hit by the vehicle before he deflated a tire by shooting at it.

A statement from the city says the officer tried to stop the car around 2:35 p.m. Monday. A chase followed after the motorist fled the scene.

According to the statement, the car stopped in traffic on U.S. 15-501 at Manning Drive. When the officer got out of his car, the motorist he was pursuing put the car in reverse and struck the officer, who fired his weapon once and hit the left rear tire. The motorist fled the scene again but was taken into custody without incident.

Neither the officer nor anyone else was hurt. There was no immediate word on charges.
