ROCKLAND, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts teenager was taken to the hospital after stepping on a used hypodermic needle while fishing, prompting a search by firefighters that turned up eight more.

Fire officials say the 16-year-old boy was fishing on an island at Reed Pond in Rockland on Sunday when he stepped on the needle.

His mother took him to the emergency room for evaluation.

Rockland fire officials do not know the condition of the child.

Firefighters searched the area after the teen was hurt and found eight more discarded needles
