NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a 2-year-old girl struck by falling debris from a building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side has died.

The girl had been rushed to a hospital in critical condition after the Sunday morning mishap on West End Avenue near 74th Street. The child’s grandmother also was struck on the wrist and shin.

The two had been sitting on a bench when they were hit by pieces of an eighth floor window sill that had broken off the 14-story building. Built in 1923, it now houses individual apartments for senior citizens.

A city Department of Buildings emergency crew was sent to the site to investigate.

The building’s owners released a statement Monday saying they were heartbroken by the tragedy and were fully cooperating with the investigation to safeguard the public.
