SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - A Springfield man who hit and killed three children with his pickup truck has been cited for careless driving.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/1HdQLyF ) that 68-year-old Larry James LaThorpe was cited Sunday and is expected to appear in Springfield Municipal Court June 8. The citation means LaThorpe could be fined up to $12,500. Is license will also be suspended for one year.

Prosecutors said earlier this month they would not pursue criminal charges for the crash.

The collision killed 8-year old John Alysander Day, 5-year-old McKenzie Mae Hudson and 4-year-old Tyler James Hudson. Their mother, Cortney Hudson-Crawford, suffered serious injuries. The family was in the crosswalk while returning home after buying ice cream.

James Crawford-Hudson, the father, called the citation a “slap on the hand.”
