NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The French Market Corporation has been using an avian toxicant on roofs in Jackson Square to get rid of pigeons.

WWL-TV in New Orleans reports (https://bit.ly/1L6I4te ) the feeders were taken away after the city of New Orleans determined it’s not the most effective way to reduce pigeon populations in areas where a lot of people gather.

The feeders were used for several weeks. Some residents say they had seen fewer birds.

French Market Corporation says in a statement the bait feeders were removed when the city suggested it find other nonchemical solutions to control the birds.

The organization says it has taken steps to reduce nuisance pests like pigeons by improving garbage removal and excluding food sources utilized by pests. It also says visitors should stop feeding the pigeons.
