UNION CITY, Ga. (AP) - The mother of a 19-year-old man shot by police in Union City plans to attend the town’s city council meeting Tuesday night and is asking community members to join her.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said this week it reopened its probe into the 2011 shooting after an investigation by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV raised questions about why Ariston Waiters was shot and the thoroughness of the police investigation.

Union City police have said Waiters was shot after he went for an officer’s gun.

The GBI investigated at the time, and the agency is conducting more interviews with officers after the news reports. Union City Police Chief Chuck Odom told The Associated Press this week that his department also conducted an internal affairs investigation after the shooting.

A grand jury declined to indict the officer.
