Schools in Kenai Peninsula learn how to respond to intruders

KENAI, Alaska (AP) - Students around the Kenai Peninsula are learning how to better respond to intruders through mock drill training.

The Peninsula Clarion reports (https://bit.ly/1L5GYOs ) that administration began A.L.I.C.E. Training, an acronym for “Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate,” before the start of the school year and it is now being taught to students.

Fourth grade Mountain View Elementary teacher Dave Daniel says the new protocol gives teachers more autonomy to make safety decisions for their students. It allows them to evacuate the classroom and run to safety if an intruder is on the other side of the building.

In April, Kenai Central High School used A.L.I.C.E. protocol after a 15-year-old student sent a peer threatening text messages. Principal Alan Fields says his students were prepared and responded appropriately.
