ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Alexandria leaders are looking at a proposal that intends to prevent an increase in the number of bingo halls and charitable gaming sites.

Councilman Harry Silver tells The Town Talk (https://townta.lk/1F1OV3l ) that the proposal replaces a planned tweaking of the existing ordinance. He says the council may consider it in a couple of weeks.

A moratorium on bingo expansion in Alexandria has been in place for about eight years, but the moratorium has been by resolution, not by ordinance.

Silver says having an ordinance will be “putting more teeth” into the moratorium.

It would allow a newly licensed charitable group moving into an existing bingo hall that is licensed when the ordinance takes effect.

The city council must approve any move of a current bingo operation.
