YOUNGSTOWN, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate who escaped from a work center near Birmingham was arrested on a DUI charge in the Florida Panhandle.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office says 46-year-old John Edward Sharpe was stopped Tuesday by deputies responding to reports of a reckless driver on U.S. 231.

The News Herald of Panama City (https://bit.ly/1FvpUkM ) reports deputies stopped Sharpe, who then started driving erratically in the post office parking lot. He was eventually taken into custody.

Investigators learned Sharpe had escaped Monday from the Red Eagle Work Center in Jefferson County, Alabama. He was serving time for a robbery in nearby Shelby County. The Toyota Tundra truck he drove had been reported stolen.

He was charged with DUI with additional charges pending. It’s not clear whether he has an attorney.
