CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Power industry experts say a Las Vegas tech company is within its rights to sever ties with NV Energy.

The Las Vegas Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1Bc1xn9 ) that the tech company, Switch, applied to the Public Utilities Commission in November for permission to generate and purchase power without the utility.

The PUC released a legal memo last week that argued against Switch’s proposal, saying the company was twisting state statute to leave NV Energy. Three independent regulators for the commission will make a final decision in June.

But experts on the state law say Switch can make use of it. The statute allows companies to leave the utility if they consume more than 1 megawatt of power a year and get PUC approval.

A Super Walmart uses three-quarters of a megawatt per year. Switch uses 34.
