CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - More than a million North Carolinians are expected to hit the highways this Memorial Day for the start of the summer travel season.

AAA Carolinas reports that that will be the highest number in a decade.

The motor club based in Charlotte reports that a strong economy and relatively low gas prices will mean more people taking to the road.

In all 1.1 million North Carolinians are expected to travel more than 50 miles during the long three-day weekend. That includes people who are flying or using other means of transportation.

The average price for a gallon of gas in North Carolina is $2.55 a gallon. That’s the lowest Memorial Day weekend price in six years.
