LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Federal agents have raided a Little Rock pharmacy and a medical clinic as part of a multistate crackdown on prescription drug abuse.

A senior official with the Drug Enforcement Administration says early-morning raids Wednesday were held in Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The official says the raids are the final stage of an operation launched last summer by the DEA’s drug diversion unit focusing on the illegal sale of painkillers. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of a public announcement.

At least six people were escorted in handcuffs from a west Little Rock medical clinic, and a woman was taken from a pharmacy about a mile away.

The official says that before Wednesday’s raids, 140 people had been arrested and agents expected to make another 170.
