EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - A man convicted in the 2002 killing of an 18-year-old Marysville woman is back in Snohomish County Jail awaiting a new trial.
The Daily Herald of Everett reports (https://is.gd/PR550l ) that a state appellate court in 2013 overturned John Alan Whitaker’s murder conviction and granted him a new trial. Snohomish County prosecutors learned earlier this year that the state’s high court declined to review their appeal.
Rachel Burkheimer was kidnapped and shot to death in 2002 by a band of young criminals led by her ex-boyfriend, John Anderson.
Whitaker had been serving a life sentence at the Washington State Reformatory in Monroe until last week when he was transferred to the jail in Everett.
