DENVER (AP) - A man accused of burning his soldier wife with boiling water, whipping her with a cable and strangling her into unconsciousness has been sentenced to 45 years in federal prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old Mitchell Gibson was sentenced Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to several counts of assault.

Prosecutors say the abuse began while Gibson was dating his future wife and throughout the four years of their marriage. His wife, a Fort Carson soldier, was repeatedly treated for broken bones including a broken jaw. But she never reported the abuse until March 25, 2014, after her husband choked her and threatened to kill her daughter.

Prosecutors say she had not gone to law enforcement before but sought medical treatment many times. The couple lived together at Fort Carson.
