NEW YORK (AP) - The New York City Council is announcing the results of its annual participatory budget process.

Twenty-four of the council’s 51 districts partake in the program. It allows constituents to vote on how money is spent for capital projects.

During the 10-day voting period last month, 51,000 New Yorkers cast their ballots to direct $32 million in city funds.

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito said the program results “in a city dialogue that is truly inclusive” and gives voice to those often left out of the electoral process.

Council officials said that nearly a quarter of those who participated are not eligible to vote in standard elections.

One in 10 of people who participated were under 18. And nearly 30 percent reported an annual household income of $25,000 or below.
