DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - One of the civil rights era murals that has graced the Riverfront YMCA building in Des Moines will be re-created at the new downtown YMCA.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1CnbMoG ) that a group of people who wanted the murals removed and reassembled elsewhere acknowledge that the cost would be too high. The old building has been vacant since the new Wellmark branch opened. The building is scheduled to be demolished this summer.

The paper says developer and investor Jim Cownie has agreed to raise $150,000 for re-creation of a mural showing hands of three different colors coming together. Plans are to erect the mural in a small park on the northwest side of the new YMCA.
