PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police say a woman was critically injured when she was run over by a public transit bus she was trying to board in Providence.

Police said the 31-year-old woman was struck about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Her leg became trapped under one of the tires on the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus.

Witnesses said she fell as she was trying to get on the bus, which was starting to pull away from the Broad Street stop downtown. One witness says the woman was knocking on the bus door to try to get the driver’s attention.

Police said the woman was conscious when she was taken to the hospital. Her name wasn’t released.

RIPTA said the driver is on administrative leave during an investigation.

Two people have been fatally hit by RIPTA buses in the past year.
