SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City officials are asking residents to join them in opposing a proposal to put a new state prison near Salt Lake City International Airport.
KSL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1cOM1Yo) the legislature’s commission on the project is nearing its summer deadline to make a recommendation on the site of the prison.
Five locations are being considered, including one west of the airport. Members of city council and mayor Ralph Becker said in a joint statement Monday that residents should join them in a show of opposition at a Wednesday night informational meeting at Utah State Fairpark.
Two more open houses are set for May 28 in Grantsville and June 2 in Eagle Mountain.
The city posted a detailed list of reasons the project shouldn’t be in Salt Lake City online. A Change.org petition opposes the project’s potential location.
