MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith says he expects to join Gov. Peter Shumlin in endorsing Hillary Clinton for president over Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The Democratic governor made the announcement in a tweet from his campaign account on Wednesday - the same day that Sanders, who is seeking the Democratic nomination, announced details of his campaign kickoff in Burlington.

Shumlin tweeted, “Proud to endorse @HillaryClinton—a lifelong champion for everyday Americans.”

Smith said he endorsed Clinton in 2008, and expects to again.

Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs says it’s a free country and people can endorse whomever they want.
