MADRID (AP) - Princess Leonor, heir to the Spanish throne, has celebrated her first communion in a low-key ceremony that broke with tradition.

First communions have long been major social occasions for the Spanish crown. The event has always been held in the royal palace, with nobody else receiving the sacrament at the same time.

Since King Felipe VI came to the throne last year, he has sought to open up the monarchy and bring it closer to Spaniards. Leonor, aged 9, took communion Wednesday at a suburban Madrid church wearing her school uniform and accompanied by two dozen classmates.

The king and Queen Letizia were also present, as were former monarchs Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.
