TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The widow of the former mayor of Toledo, Ohio, says she’s running in a special election to finish the last two years of his term.

Sandy Drabik Collins said Wednesday she wants to carry out his agenda.

D. Michael Collins died in February after suffering cardiac arrest. He was just over a year into his first term as mayor of Ohio’s fourth-largest city. He was thrust into the spotlight last summer when algae blooms in Lake Erie tainted the tap water for 400,000 people in Ohio and Michigan for two days.

Mrs. Collins says she’ll run as an independent.

Democrat Paula Hicks-Hudson became mayor after Collins’ death and will serve until the November special election. She plans to run for mayor.

Former Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner says he’s considering running, too.
