ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) - A Maine man charged with killing his wife on Christmas Day 2013 admits hitting her two days earlier in a fight over text messages but denies that there was an altercation on the day she died.

Chris Saenz of Ellsworth made the statements in a recorded conversation with a state police detective that was played in court on Tuesday. The trial resumes Wednesday in Bangor.

Prosecutors say Saenz was angry because he felt his wife was having an affair.

An autopsy revealed multiple injuries including brain bleeding.

Witnesses who testified Tuesday included neighbors. One says the couple’s children, ages 8 and 12 at the time, dropped by on Christmas Day and said, “Mom won’t wake up.”
